Roblox fonts: what gets through the filter

Roblox filters text harder than any other platform here, and it filters your display name and bio separately from chat. That is why a style that works fine on Discord can come back as hashtags on Roblox. Here is what actually survives.

Why this works at all

Roblox has no font setting, and this is not a way around one. What you copy from this page is not a font — it is a set of separate characters that already exist in Unicode, the master catalogue of every character a computer knows how to show.

The letter ᴀ in ꜱᴍᴀʟʟᴄᴀᴘꜱ is its own character with its own Unicode address. It is not a normal "a" with styling applied. Roblox just sees characters and treats them like any other text you typed.

Which means: whether a style works comes down entirely to whether Roblox's filter allows those particular characters. It is not about the style being fancy — it is about which characters it uses.

Display name and username are not the same thing

Roblox gives you two names and they follow very different rules.

• Username — the one you log in with and the one friends use to find you. Plain letters, numbers and a single underscore. Nothing styled will ever be accepted here, and changing it costs Robux, so it is not the place to experiment.
• Display name — the name shown above your avatar and in game. This is the one that accepts more, and the one this page is really for. It can be changed without spending Robux, though Roblox limits how often.

Because display name changes are rate-limited, it is genuinely worth testing what you want before you use up a change on something that comes back filtered.

Why Roblox filters so much

Roblox has a very large younger player base, so its text filter is deliberately strict — stricter than most platforms, and stricter for younger accounts. It is not trying to stop you having a nice name. It is trying to stop people spelling things past the filter using unusual characters, which is exactly the technique fancy fonts use.

So expect some styles to be rejected, replaced with hashtags, or silently reverted. That is the filter doing its job, not a bug in this page and not something to try to defeat. The practical answer is to use the styles that pass rather than hunting for ways around a safety system.

What tends to survive

Styles built from characters that are close to ordinary letters do best, because they are easier for the filter to read and confirm as harmless. In general:

• ꜱᴍᴀʟʟᴄᴀᴘꜱ and ᴡɪᴅᴇ are usually the most reliable — they stay clearly readable, which is exactly what a filter wants.
• Simple, well-established styles do better than obscure ones.
• Anything heavily decorated — and zalgo above all — is the most likely to be blocked outright. Zalgo also renders messily over other players' names in game, so it is unpopular for good reason.
• Long strings of unusual symbols tend to attract the filter more than a single styled word.

Roblox updates its filter regularly, so treat all of this as a strong starting point rather than a permanent guarantee. If a name gets filtered, that is information — try a simpler style rather than a weirder one.

Groups, games and descriptions

Group names, game titles and descriptions all go through filtering too, and descriptions are often checked more strictly than names because there is more room to hide things. The same rule applies: readable styles pass more often.

There is also a readability argument for groups specifically. A group name is something people need to recognise and search for. If it is heavily styled, players cannot type it to find you, which defeats the point of having a group name at all. Keeping it readable is usually the better call regardless of the filter.

If your name gets filtered

Nothing has gone wrong with your account, and it is not permanent. Try a plainer style — smallcaps and wide are the usual fallbacks — or use styling on only part of the name and keep the rest ordinary. A single styled word alongside plain letters passes far more often than a fully styled name.

Chat is filtered separately and more strictly again, especially for younger accounts. Fancy text in chat is much more likely to be blocked than the same text in your display name. That is expected behaviour.

Two things worth knowing

• Being findable. Styled characters really are different characters, so a friend searching your plain name may not find your styled display name. Your username still works for that, which is exactly why Roblox keeps it plain.
• Screen readers. Anyone using software to read the screen aloud gets these announced one character at a time by their technical names, or not at all. Keeping some plain letters in your name is a kind thing to do.
